  • President Volodymyr Zelensky has been doling out harsh criticism to local officials around the country over the past two weeks. Most recently, the president requested the resignation of Oleksandr Vlasov, acting head of the State Fiscal Service, after Vlasov failed to fire several Odesa customs officials allegedly involved in smuggling. Vlasov submitted his resignation on July 14.
  • Ukrainian journalist Stanislav Aseyev, who was kidnapped by pro-Russia forces in the Donbas, was ranked fifth on the “10 Most Urgent” list of targeted journalists by the One Free Press Coalition. Aseyev’s family members have expressed serious concerns about his health. 
  • Bohdan Kravchuk made history by becoming the first Ukrainian with Down Syndrome to earn a bachelor’s degree. The graduate received a history degree from the Lesya Ukrainka East European National University in Lutsk.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky is changing Ukraine’s diplomatic corps, starting by replacing 12 embassy chiefs worldwide.
  • Ukraine ranked ninth in a list of the top 10 waste-producing countries by 24/7 Tempo, using the World Bank’s “What a Waste” global database. Most of Ukraine’s waste his hazardous. Managing it will be one of the government’s most urgent challenges.
  • Ukraine has won the gold medal in artistic swimming at the FINA World Championships 2019 in Gwangju, the Republic of Korea.
