  • The parliament rejected President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s bill that sought to change the election system. Now, the snap parliamentary election in July will take place within the existing legal framework. The existing election system fosters vote buying and gives voters little control over who is on the party ballot.
  • Russian-backed militants took eight Ukrainian military servicemen prisoner without a fight on the morning of May 22 in the war zone of Donbas, according to the Ukrainian military. The incident has been one of the worst developments for the Ukrainian troops in the Donbas in months.
  • On May 22, several Ukrainian media reported, quoting anonymous sources, that International Monetary Fund was terminating its mission in Ukraine. IMF denied this rumor.
