You're reading: Denisova insists on evacuation of Ukrainian citizens from India

The Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova has reported numerous appeals from citizens of Ukraine who remain in India and who are unable to return home on their own.

“They are deprived of the financial opportunity to return to Ukraine on their own, including due to the fact that the airlines did not return money for canceled flights,” Denisova wrote on the Telegram channel.

She also noted that the shutdown of urban and intercity transport in India created additional barriers to free access to Delhi International Airport.

“Now our fellow citizens are in very difficult conditions because of the hostile attitude of the local population towards foreigners, whom they consider to be spreaders of the COVID-19 coronavirus infection. Most of them were forcibly evicted from hotels. They were left in the territory of another state without drinking water and food. A life-threatening situation has unfolded, especially for minors, insulin-dependent people and people of retirement age, who are also among those who are forced to stay in India,” the Ombudswoman emphasized.

“I appeal to Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba with the request to take the necessary measures to protect the rights and freedoms of citizens of Ukraine, in particular, to carry out their evacuation to Ukraine as soon as possible,” Denisova said, recalling that according to paragraph 13 of the “Procedure for carrying out evacuation in the event of a threat of emergency occurrence or occurrence of an emergency situation,” evacuation of citizens in the event of a threat to their life and health in the territory of foreign states is carried out by decision of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
