You're reading: Denisova to hold news briefing for ambassadors in Moscow about prolongation of Ukrainian prisoners of war captivity

Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova will meet international diplomats accredited to Moscow to discuss ways to free Ukrainian naval seamen that were taken prisoners of war by Russia in late 2018.

“I will have a news briefing for ambassadors who will come to the embassy of Ukraine to learn our opinion on how the legal trial that lasted for two days ended,” Denisova said in an interview with the Pryamiy TV channel on January 16.

She said she is going to ask the diplomats to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to apprise him of “the opinion of their [respective] countries,” which were made public on January 15.

“So that they … demand the unconditional release of our POW seamen… I want them … to insist that documented evidence be provided whether the rendered medical assistance had been adequate for the injuries our POWs had sustained,” Denisova said.

She said it would be nice if “some third country” could take the Ukrainian POWs that were wounded for medical treatment.

“Of course, I will ask them to continue their pressure on the Russian Federation with the help of sanctions, by way of heightening those sanctions,” the Ukrainian ombudswoman said.

As earlier reported, diplomats from the European Union, the United States, and several other nations attended the hearings at the Lefortovskiy Court in Moscow on January 15, which were held to consider the prolongation of the term of the arrest of the Ukrainian naval seamen taken POWs near the Kerch Strait in November 2018.
