Representatives of a number of embassies of EU member states and the EU Delegation to Ukraine have visited the town of Berehove (Zakarpattia region) to assess the situation with the observance of rights of national minorities in the region.

“Representatives of the Embassies of Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Luxembourg, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and representatives of the EU in Ukraine have visited Berehove district today. First they met with the leadership of the district and the city,” the press center of Berehove District State Administration of Zakarpattia region said on Nov.29.

The press center noted that Berehove District Administration Head Ishtvan Petrushka, Berehove District Council Chairman Yosyp Shin and Mayor of Berehove Zoltan Babiak met with representatives of the embassies of the EU member states.

“During the meeting, they discussed the progress of reforms in Ukraine and the situation with the law of Ukraine ‘On Education’, as well as the respect for the rights of national minorities in our region,” Berehove District State Administration reported.

The local officials noted that despite the fact that Zakarpattia and Berehove district have always been a multi-ethnic region, there has never been ethnic hostility, and “now there are many external factors that fuel contradictions.”

“In turn, the EU representatives noted that, according to their observations, national minorities in Ukraine have fairly broad rights and are well protected by the legislation of Ukraine, because not all EU countries have such support at the legislative level. Nevertheless, all interested parties should be heard,” the report says.
