DONETSK – An explosion has occurred on the grounds of the Donetsk Chemical Plant, the Donetsk city administration said on Feb. 14.

“According to preliminary reports, an explosion occurred in the maintenance workshop area at the Donetsk Chemical Plant (in the Kuibyshevsky district) at around 10 a.m. No information on casualties and damage is currently available. The causes of the explosion are being established together with the plant’s management,” the Donetsk city administration said in a report posted on its website on Feb. 14.

People living near the plant told Interfax that windows had been smashed in a number of houses on Lenkoranska Street.

Black smoke is billowing in the northwestern part of the city.

The plant explosion damaged a hospital and a number of residential buildings, a spokesman for the Kuibyshevsky district administration told the press. “The explosion at the plant damaged a number of residential buildings on Kremliovsky Avenue, and ten windows were smashed in Hospital No. 21; no one was hurt,” he said.
