Kyiv court has arrested an employee of a Ukrainian defense plant who is suspected of state treason, the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

“Investigators found out that a worker of a state-owned enterprise of the defense and industrial sector was recruited by an agent of the 316th Intelligence Center of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces while staying in Russia in 2014 for the purpose of collecting and transferring the military data for misusing while carrying out subversive activity against our country,” according to the statement released on July 4.

The Prosecutor General’s Office said that this Ukrainian citizen while performing Russian intelligence missions and for a reward has gathered and handed over the information on the quantities and quality of military hardware of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which was delivered for the repair to the state-owned defense plant, and on the condition of its combat readiness, its kits, and its belonging to concrete military units and other military information that subsequently can harm Ukraine’s national security and defense capacity.

“On July 3, 2019, when attempting to cross the Ukrainian state border into the Russian Federation, investigators and operative agents of the Ukrainian Security Service detained this man under Article 208 of the Ukrainian Criminal Procedural Code. Flashcards and cellular phones with the information, which the latter should have handed over to an agent of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces at their next meeting in the Russian city of Voronezh, have been seized from him,” the oversight agency said.

On the same day, this person was said to be suspected of committing a crime defined by Part 1 Article 111 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code (state treason).

“On July 4, an investigative judge of Kyiv’s Shevchenkivsky District Court ruled to remand the suspect into custody, at the same time determining a bail for him at Hr 1.7 million,” the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

Primary investigative and other procedural actions are being undertaken as part of criminal proceedings, it added.
