You're reading: European Commission: New Russia-Ukraine gas contract should be long-term

BRUSSELS – Any new contract on gas supply between Russia and Ukraine should be long-term, Vice President of the European Commission in charge of the Energy Union Maros Sefcovic said at a press conference in Brussels.

The issue will be discussed on Sept. 19.

“Only a long-term contract would ensure predictability and make it possible to renovate the Ukrainian gas pipeline,” Sefcovic said.

He stressed the importance of complying with European transit law.

“Time is pressing, as the current contract expires at the end of the year, and Russia and Ukraine need to understand how important this issue is,” Sefcovic said.

He added that a positive outcome would confirm Russia’s image as a reliable supplier and Ukraine’s as a reliable transit country.

“Ensuring long-term gas transit through Ukraine is key for European energy security,” Sefcovic said.
