The former director general of Kharkiv Tractor Plant, Vladyslav Hubin, in April 2018 convicted in absentia by a Ukrainian court to eight years in prison for embezzling more than Hr 20 million, received political asylum and a permanent resident card in Spain, the lawyer, representing the interests of Hubin in Spain, has told Interfax-Ukraine.

According to him, the Interior Ministry of Spain made the decision on the basis of the decision of the Interministerial Commission for Refugees under the Government of the Kingdom of Spain.

“This decision of Spanish authorities, according to the Dublin Regulation, has legal force and is valid throughout the EU, as well as Switzerland, the UK, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein,” the lawyer said.

He said that the interministerial commission had been considering this issue for more than two years, and came to the conclusion about the political prosecution of the former director general of Kharkiv Tractor Plant in Ukraine within the criminal case, which, according to the Spanish authorities, was fabricated and not aimed at protecting the citizen, the society and the state from criminal offenses.

As reported, Kharkiv’s Ordzhonikidze District Court on April 13, 2018 sentenced Hubin in absentia to eight years in prison with confiscation of property for embezzlement and forgery.
