You're reading: Ex-US defense secretary: Idea of relaxing relations with Russia unpopular in US society and politics

US Secretary of Defense (in 2015-2017) Ashton Carter believes that the idea of rapprochement of the US with Russia has no support either in the US society, in the press, or among politicians.

It is important to note that the opportunity to relax relations with Russia now has no support either in the media, in the Congress or in the public. I’m not sure that such support exists among the European leaders, he said, speaking at a public panel discussion “Security for Ukraine” in Kyiv on Dec.11.

Carter also noted that Ukraine should continue developing its defense potential.

It seems to me that the US and the European Union should help Ukraine in this … There are some areas – if we talk about the weapons system, the air defense system – that require reforming. In my opinion, the United States can do more, he said, adding that this idea is quite common among the US political class and it has support.
