Four people were injured after an unknown device exploded on the evening of July 17, at the entrance to the Shulyavska metro station, one of Kyiv’s busiest metro stations, Kyiv police reported the same day.

A 22-year-old college student has a leg injury and is in serious condition. He was hospitalized. The other three victims, suffering minor injuries, were released after examination.

The station continued to operate normally while explosive experts checked the premises and found no other devices in the area.

The police opened a pre-trial investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident and the origin of the explosive device.

Law enforcement stated the device was hidden in a plastic trash can, located at the entrance of the metro station.

Ukrainian cities began installing plastic trash cans en masse after several similar explosions took place in Dnipro, a city of 1 million people 400 kilometers southeast of Kyiv, in 2012, just weeks before the Euro 2012 football championship took place in Ukraine. Back then, the bombs placed in trash cans near tram stations injured 26 people.

Security experts stated the injuries were caused by the debris of cement trash cans, which lead to Dnipro and other big cities replacing many of its cement trash cans with plastic ones.
