A police serviceperson, part of Ukraine’s 40,000-strong Joint Forces contingent in the war zone of Donbas, has been confirmed a COVID-19 case, the Ukrainian military said on May 26.

This is the first case registered among the Ukrainian personnel in the embattled region.

“It is confirmed that the law enforcer was fulfilling his tasks at one of the road checkpoints in Donetsk Oblast,” the message from the military headquarters states.

“The patient is currently hospitalized at an infectious disease ward under medical supervision. His condition is reassuring.”

All persons who had recently had contact with the patient were isolated, examined, and tested regarding the coronavirus infection, the military also said, adding that the service premises of the serviceman’s police unit were disinfected.

“The Joint Forces command implies all measures necessary to contain the spread of coronavirus infection in military units,” the military also added.

As of May 26 morning, the medical service of Ukraine’s Armed Forces reported 60 confirmed COVID-19 cases among military personnel.

In general 96 persons have recovered since the beginning of the pandemic, and two persons died.

261 military servicepersons remain in isolation.
