You're reading: French govt envoy says Ukraine should serve as bridge between Europe, Russia

Efforts to bring France and Russia closer should begin by settling the Ukraine crisis, French governmental envoy for relations with Russia Jean-Pierre Chevenement said at a meeting with Russian State Duma Chair Vyacheslav Volodin on November 7.

“It’s important to focus on Ukraine. This country should become a bridge between Europe and Russia. This stupid conflict shouldn’t be prolonged,” Chevenement said.

“I met with Mr. Putin in early May 2014, and it seemed to me that the Minsk document reflected what he wanted,” Chevenement said in talking about Ukraine.

“I believe most people don’t want to return to the Cold War times,” he said.

“I promise that I will meet with all heads of our committees and try to intensify work toward closer relations,” Chevenement said.
