Leader of the Golos party, MP from the same faction Svyatoslav Vakarchuk is concerned over information that the German Bundestag may not recognize the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

“The Golos Party sincerely hopes that the Bundestag will make a decision that recognizes the Holodomor as genocide because international recognition is the only way to avoid the recurrence of terrible tragedies in the future,” Vakarchuk wrote on his Facebook page on Oct. 22.

He noted that in May, a petition to the Bundestag for recognizing the Holodomor as genocide gained 56,000 signatures and said that he also supported it.

“The Holodomor, like the Holocaust, is a crime of genocide. Both were committed by totalitarian regimes. Therefore, we are anxious about the news that the German parliament may not accept the idea of recognizing the Holodomor as genocide,” Vakarchuk emphasized.

As reported, on October 21, the Petition Committee of the German Parliament (Bundestag) in open session considered an appeal recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide of the Ukrainian people, but the German Foreign Ministry was in favor of rejecting the petition, Deutsche Welle said referring to a member of the committee, deputy from CDU Arnold Faatz.

According to the Deutsche Welle, a petition on the website of the German Bundestag for recognizing the Holodomor in Ukraine of 1932-33 as genocide appeared in May of this year and collected more than 56,000 signatures – more than the minimum required for consideration – 50,000.
