Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman has said he intends to fight the rise in food prices by saturating the domestic market with Ukrainian goods, rather than by returning to state price regulation.

“There were a number of reasons why this happened [the rise in prices for products in Ukraine], but this was due to the fact that the state did not pay attention to many events and there was a shortage of goods,” he said live on the Ukraina television channel on March 21.

In addition, Groysman noted that food prices began to grow in the world markets last year, which led to an increase in exports and a shortage of products in the Ukrainian market.

“Regarding state regulation [of prices for products], this is possible as a measure, but networks and manufacturers have always bypassed it, and in fact it did not keep growth in any way,” Groysman said.

He recalled that prices in Ukraine had been growing in all the years, despite state price regulation.

“What is important is that people’s income outstrips this growth and that the Ukrainian market is saturated with high-quality Ukrainian products,” he said.

“This year, through the support of respective programs for the development of the agricultural sector, including food provision, we will saturate the market with Ukrainian products, and such a rise in prices will no longer be recorded,” Groysman said.
