On Jan. 16 the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, passed a controversial raft of legislation (dubbed the “Dictatorship Laws” based on similar Russian laws that criminalized a range of protest actions, including the wearing of helmets by protesters. EuroMaidan supporters responded by donning colanders, pots, and metal buckets in mockery of the parliament, which in any case had passed the repressive laws illegally by a show of hands.
