You're reading: Over half of Ukrainians back Ukraine’s accession to EU

More than half of Ukrainians – 51 percent – favor the country’s accession to the European Union and 19 percent to the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, as is evident from a public opinion poll of 2,400 respondents that the Rating sociological survey service conducted under a contract with the International Republican Institute in all regions of Ukraine, except for Donbas, from September 28 to October 7, 2016.

Asked what they would prefer if Ukraine could become a member of only one international economic union, 51 percent chose the EU, 19 percent the Customs Union, 14 percent gave a different answer, and 17 percent were undecided.

The share of respondents choosing the EU was the highest in the western and central parts of Ukraine (79 percent and 59 percent respectively), while only 37 percent of respondents favored the EU in the southern and 24 percent in the eastern parts of the country, with 22 percent in the southern and 40 percent in the eastern regions choosing the Customs Union.

The poll’s margin of error is within 2.0 percent.
