You're reading: Heavy rain again floods Kyiv streets, shopping centers

Just three days after heavy rainfalls left Kyiv streets in havoc, a fresh downpour swamped the city on the night of Aug. 19.

The storm felled trees and washed out road sections, among the most damaged being Peremohy Avenue and Khreschatyk, Baseina and Esplananda streets. Citizens in various neighborhood reported brief power cuts.

Video footage from a square near the Gulliver shopping center showed cars semi-submerged in water and floating.

The inside of the Gulliver mall also suffered: water filled an underground parking lot and the ground floor. Another underground shopping center, Metrograd, was also flooded.

More serious damage appeared on a road section of Antonovycha Street, where a drain system collapsed and the road surface sank, creating holes and craters.

By noon of the following day, Kyiv city workers had dealt with most of the consequences of the bad weather.

“All of the streets have been cleared. The municipal services have already removed the mud and remaining water. Public transport is running according to the schedule,” Taras Panchiy, an official from Kyiv City Administration, said in an interview with 112 television channel on Aug. 19.

The Ukrainian meteorology center, however, warned about more heavy rains and thunderstorms coming on Aug. 19.

Kyiv City Administration in an announcement advised citizens to stay at home and keep their windows closed.

“If you happen to be outside, stay away from billboards, trees, and power lines. If there is strong wind, find shelter, and don’t park cars under trees,” the announcement read.
