You're reading: Herashchenko: Ukrainian consuls seek meeting with Sentsov

The Ukrainian consuls in Ukraine are seeking a personal meeting with prisoner Oleg Sentsov, who said he is stopping his hunger strike, and Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Liudmyla Denisova and Ukrainian doctors are ready to immediately go to meet with him, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada First Deputy Speaker Iryna Herashchenko said.

“I have just received the following information from the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry: Oleg Sentsov’s defense lawyer Dmitry Dinze has confirmed that Oleg stops his hunger strike starting from tomorrow. That is, on Saturday,” Herashchenko said on Facebook on Oct. 5.

The decision to stop the hunger strike is Sentsov’s personal decision, of which he has written a corresponding statement, she said.

“We now have no precise information on his current, real state of health. Our consuls are seeking a personal meeting with Oleg, who is a citizen of Ukraine,” Herashchenko said.

Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner Liudmyla Denisova and Ukrainian doctors intend to immediately leave to meet with Sentsov “if there is authorization and permission from Moscow,” she said.

Ukraine is ready to immediately take Sentsov and provide him with necessary treatment and rehabilitation and exchange him for some of the Russians convicted for grave crimes in Ukraine, she said.
