High-speed electric trains from Cherkasy to Kyiv will be launched in 2021 in connection with the electrification of the railway to the Shevchenko station in Smila, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has said.

“This year, thanks to the modernization and electrification of the railway from Cherkasy to the station of Tarasa Shevchenko in the town of Smila with a total length of 30 km, high-speed electric trains will be launched from Cherkasy to the capital with a journey time of 2 hours and 30 minutes,” the official stated.

The prime minister stressed that the electrification of this section is a historic moment, because only two cities – Cherkasy and Zhytomyr – have so far been deprived of railway communication with the vast majority of regions of Ukraine.

Also, thanks to the electrification of the railway from Cherkasy to the Shevchenko station, residents of the region will receive a qualitatively new suburban communication with the regional center. Shmyhal also said that plans for the coming years provide for the extension of electrification from Cherkasy to Hrebinka station with a total length of 90 km.

In addition, it is reported that daily trains will be launched from Cherkasy to the neighboring regional center – Kropyvnytsky, and it will also be possible to launch a daytime high-speed train on the route Kharkiv-Cherkasy-Lviv, which will also pass through Poltava, Bila Tserkva, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytsky and Ternopil.
