Representative of the international human rights organization Human Rights Watch in Ukraine Tatyana Cooper said that the level of homophobia and transphobia among Ukrainian officials remains strong.

The fact that the level of homophobia and transphobia among Ukrainian officials remains strong is a cause for concern, Cooper said during the presentation of the Human Rights Watch’s World Report 2017 in Kyiv on Jan. 12.

According to her, the report notes that since 2014 the Ukrainian government has introduced a series of procedures in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, but strong anti-LGBT sentiment are still observed among high-ranking officials and the public.

The report also notes that the new draft amends to the Labor Code do not include provisions on combating discrimination, which would protect LGBT people in the workplace.
