You're reading: Indictments against three Berkut officers for torturing Maidan activists sent to court

The Special Investigations Department of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine has sent to the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv an indictment against three former members of a battalion the Berkut riot police of the Interior Ministry’s branch in Kharkiv region accused of torturing protesters during the EuroMaidan protests.

“The court sent an indictment on the fact of torture of protesters detained on 19.01.2014 at the colonnade of the Lobanovsky stadium,” the press service of the Prosecutor General’s Office said.

“The Berkut officers are charged with committing a criminal offense under Part 2 of Article 127 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (torture). They are charged with… torturing two people, that is deliberately inflicting severe physical pain, physical and moral suffering on them through beating, torturing and other violent acts committed on the grounds of revenge after the arrest of these protesters at the colonnade of the Lobanovsky stadium,” the report reads.
