DUSHANBE – A resident of Tajikistan’s Shakhrinav district, Gani Abdusattorov, has been found guilty of having ties with the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist organization, banned in Russia, and has been given a 14-year prison sentence.

A court in the Tajik capital Dushanbe convicted the man on charges of mercenary activities, illegally recruiting citizens of Tajikistan and non-citizens to join armed units and fight in an armed conflict or hostilities in the territory of foreign states and also preparing or attempting to commit a crime.

The investigation, which was carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office of Shakhrinav district, established that Abdusattorov had become an ISIL adherent, had forged close ties with members of this terrorist group and had been engaged in recruiting people to this organization, the press center of the Tajik Prosecutor General’s Office told Interfax.

“Abdusattorov was detained in Kyiv on February 13, 2017 while committing a crime and was extradited to Tajikistan. He confessed during the trial that he had helped recruit Tajik and foreign citizens to this organization and repented,” it said.
