A Ukrainian sailor abducted off the coast of Nigeria in September, a member of the crew of the Swiss vessel MV Glarus, has been released, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin has said.

“Thanks to everyone who helped save the team of the Swiss merchant ship MV Glarus, which was abducted by pirates in Nigerian territorial waters on September 22. One of the 12 crew members, Ukrainian Valeriy Zubitsky, should be back home tomorrow to Ukrainian Odesa,” the minister wrote on his Twitter page on October 29.

As reported, a pirate attack on MV Glarus merchant ship with 19 crew members, including three Ukrainian citizens, resulted in the capture of 12 crew members, including one Ukrainian citizen, took place in the Nigerian Gulf area on September 22.

In connection with the emergency, the embassy of Ukraine to Nigeria was instructed to establish contact with the shipowner (operator) of the vessel, the Nigerian law enforcement agencies in order to obtain information about the measures taken to release the captured Ukrainian seaman, as well as with two citizens of Ukraine who remained on board, to provide necessary assistance.
