Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Ivanna Klympush-Tsintsadze has said that about 600 women were killed in gender-based violence in Ukraine in 2017.

“The figures of women’s deaths from gender-based violence in Ukraine are absolutely terrible. The figure for 2017 is 600 women who died from gender-based violence,” she said at a briefing in Kyiv on Friday, July 6.

She noted that various legal acts were currently being drafted to improve the situation with the fight against this type of violence.

“Unfortunately, the laws that were adopted are not ideal, as we hoped. At the same time, they help create real mechanisms in the country to protect the rights of women who suffer from gender-based violence,” she added.

According to Klympush-Tsintsadze, decisions that are being prepared will help reduce the number of cases of such violence, including through preventive measures.
