Minister of Jerusalem Affairs and Minister of Environmental Protection of Israel Zeev Elkin believes the Knesset is unlikely to recognize the Holodomor ((the man-made famine of 1932-1933) as genocide of the Ukrainian people.

“I do not think that some kind of declarative decision will be taken on the Holodomor, as well as other tragic pages in the history of various peoples, because this is not in our parliamentary tradition. In our parliamentary tradition, as a rule, such declarations are not passed,” Elkin said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

He noted that Israel takes a similar position in regard to the tragic pages in the history of other nations, in particular the Armenian genocide.

“In Israel this issue has been discussed several times in the parliament, but there has never been a declarative decision, although practically all Western parliaments have adopted declarative decisions on the matter. The Israeli parliament believes that the issues of the past should be decided not by politicians, but by professionals, as part of a professional discourse,” Elkin said.
