You're reading: Kravchuk: Ukraine should be part of NATO

Ukraine’s membership in NATO is the only way to preserve the independence of the state, head of the Ukrainian delegation to the Trilateral Contact Group (TCG), the first president of Ukraine Leonid Kravchuk has said.

“Ukraine should be part of NATO. Ukraine has no other option because today it defends its land from the Russian aggressor. There is only one way – to become a NATO member, and in this way to protect the opportunity to build an independent Ukraine,” Kravchuk said on the air of the Right to Power (Pravo na Vladu) program on 1+1 TV channel.

According to Kravchuk, “Ukraine must work and fulfill what is envisaged by the NATO Membership Action Plan and the packages provided for Ukraine, and do everything to become a NATO member in the near future.”

He also added that “opposing views are still voiced by separate politicians in the Verkhovna Rada since they think like in the USSR, where NATO was the main enemy.”

“So let’s get rid of this in time. The time has come, and I am convinced that it is working for Ukraine,” the first president said.
