You're reading: Kravchuk welcomes Ukraine’s gradual estrangement from Russia

Ukraine is making important progress in establishing itself as an independent state and further distancing itself from Russia, first Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk said.

“We are gradually splitting up with and drifting away from Russia. I believe this is important, or else there are absolutely no prospects,” Kravchuk told journalists in Kyiv on August 22.

Increasingly more people in Ukraine have come to understand this, he said.

Evolution toward a civilized European state should be the main priority for Ukraine, he said.

Kravchuk also suggested that quite a lot of ‘enemies of Ukraine’ are operating inside the country.

“I don’t know another country in the entire world whose internal and external enemies would share such spiritual, ethnic, and language unity,” he said.
