Leonid Kuchma, Ukraine’s representative in the Trilateral Contact Group and second president of Ukraine (1994-2005) and Special Representative of the U.S. State Department on Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker stated at the meeting in Kyiv that there is no alternative to the Minsk agreements and pointed out the priority of implementing the security component.

“President of Ukraine (1994-2005) Leonid Kuchma has met with U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker. (…) The participants of the conversation confirmed the lack of options for the Minsk agreements and the priority of fulfilling the security component of this document,” press secretary of Kuchma, Darka Olifer wrote on Facebook.

“Only the closure of the border, the withdrawal of Russian weapons, equipment and military formations will return the true peace to Donbas,” the representative of Ukraine in the TCG noted.

Kuchma also expressed gratitude to the U.S. for the comprehensive support that they provide to Ukraine.

The meeting was also attended by U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.
