Kyiv’s Sviatoshynsky District Court has in absentia sentenced Svitlana Savchenko, ex-Crimean Supreme Council member of the sixth convocation, to 14 years in prison, the press service of Crimea Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) has said.

“For committing crimes against the foundations of national security, individuals should be prosecuted and, as an example, Savchenko was convicted of treason and sentenced to 14 years in prison. The principal duty of Crimea’s PGO office, with the support of public prosecution, was to prove guilt and ensure the inevitability of punishment,” Crimea PGO Prosecutor Ihor Ponochovny said.

The verdict of the court established that Savchenko took part in the meetings of the Supreme Council of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, at which a decree on the independence of Crimea was adopted as well as the illegitimate creation of the “Republic of Crimea” by decree. These actions subsequently led to Russia’s occupation of the peninsula.

In addition, Savchenko took part in a meeting of the illegally created the “State Council of the Republic of Crimea,” which ensured the functioning of the illegally created body, and voted for the so-called “Constitution of the Republic of Crimea,” according to which “The Republic of Crimea” became an integral part of Russia.
