Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has stated the beating of fans of the English football club Liverpool in one of Kyiv’s restaurants in the evening of May 24 is provocation and expressed hope that the initiators of the fight will be punished.

“I am confident that yesterday’s clash is provocation and I am convinced that law enforcement agencies will draw the appropriate conclusions to prevent such outrageous cases,” the mayor told reporters on Friday.

He noted that several attackers were detained by the law enforcers, and “the investigation must be prompt and open, and the case brought to court.”

“So that everyone understands that such provocations will not remain unpunished!” the mayor said.

As reported, a conflict and a fight broke out between a group of young people and fans of the English football club Liverpool in a restaurant of Kyiv near the Olympiysky Stadium in the evening of May 24.

British newspaper Mirror reports that the incident occurred in the restaurant Rooster, which is located near the venue of the Champions League final. A group of 20 masked hooligans attacked British fans at the bar, according to the Mirror. Supporters of the English club “used tables and chairs to protect themselves from attacks by masked men who stormed the institution.” Liverpool fans received cuts and wounds to the head and neck. Police detained two attackers, as well as one fan of Liverpool.

The Kyiv police said that two foreigners were injured during a bar brawl. The victims, however, declined to write statements.

Reports in social media said that Liverpool fans had been beaten by a group of radical fans from the disbanded football club CSKA (Kyiv).
