You're reading: Lawmakers propose to introduce tariff for electricity generated from waste recycling

A group of lawmakers from different factions have proposed to introduce a feed-in tariff for electricity generated from waste recycling and extended responsibility of package producers for recycling of its products.

This is outlined in bill No. 4835-d amending some Ukrainian laws. It is intended to stimulate the use of household waste as alternative energy. The document was registered in parliament on July 31.

According to the document, the feed-in tariff will apply only to electricity generated from household waste which was sorted before. Hazardous elements and recyclable materials are to be removed from waste (plastic, glass, paper and metal).

The document envisages the introduction of extended responsibility of package producers for recycling of its products. The producers can organize the repeated use of package, its recycling or pay the environment tax.

According to the bill, recycling of household waste is removed from government regulation, and it is proposed to form prices in the area on a contract basis.

The state is to introduce tariffs only for waste disposal at landfills. The tariffs are to stimulate development of recycling.

The documents bans disposal of household waste off landfills starting 2020. In addition, disposal of non-recycled household waste, which were not used to receive recycled materials and energy will be banned from 2025.
