You're reading: Lithuanian MP: Ukraine 2027 initiative to be mentioned in declaration by Ukraine-Poland-Lithuania assembly

The provisions of the Ukraine 2027 initiative will be included in the declaration of the ninth meeting of the Ukraine-Poland-Lithuania interparliamentary assembly, Andrius Kubilius, deputy chairman of the Committee on European Affairs of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, said.

“The main elements of this strategy are included in the general declaration and if tomorrow we confirm the declaration, we will have a task ahead to continue working, coordinating our moves with Poles and Ukrainians, and going forward,” Kubilius told reported in Vilnius on November 12.

“If Poland and we start working from today, we will be able to reach by 2027 (the year of Lithuania’s presidency of the Council of the European Union) that the EU is ready to make a strategic decision on the future membership in the EU of Ukraine together with Georgia, and, maybe, Moldova,” the MP said.

At the same time, he did not rule out that the EU may be ready for such a decision even earlier. “Maybe it can be done during Poland’s presidency in 2025. And maybe even earlier, let’s say, in 2020, when Germany will be holding the presidency,” Kubilius said.

He said one of the reasons for such optimism is a recent statement by German Chancellor Angela Merkel that Ukraine and Georgia have the strongest prospects to join the EU; however, about ten years will be required for the EU to get ready for such a move and for Ukraine and Georgia to get prepared for it.

As was earlier reported, the Ukraine 2027 initiative was presented by the Lithuanian party at the ninth meeting of the Ukraine-Poland-Lithuania interparliamentary assembly in Vilnius.
