Individuals detained for beating British citizens, fans of Liverpool, are students of a university in Kyiv, the head of the main directorate of the Kyiv police, Andriy Kryschenko, has said.

“Two persons were detained and taken to the district [police] department. These are citizens of Ukraine, born in 1997, who are students of one of the universities of Kyiv. They refused to give explanations,” Kryschenko said in a video posted on the Facebook page of the Kyiv police.

According to him, proceedings were opened under Part 2, Article 296 (hooliganism). Investigative actions are being conducted.

Kryschenko noted that the police had informed the British consulate about the incident. He also said that the victims had received primary medical care and refused to provide explanations on the incident.

As reported, a conflict and a fight broke out between a group of young people and fans of the English football club Liverpool in a restaurant of Kyiv near the Olympiysky Stadium in the evening of May 24.

British newspaper Mirror reports that the incident occurred in the restaurant Rooster, which is located near the venue of the Champions League final. A group of 20 masked hooligans attacked British fans at the bar, according to the Mirror. Supporters of the English club “used tables and chairs to protect themselves from attacks by masked men who stormed the institution.” Liverpool fans received cuts and wounds to the head and neck. Police detained two attackers, as well as one fan of Liverpool.

The Kyiv police said that two foreigners were injured during a bar brawl. The victims, however, declined to write statements.

Reports in social media said that Liverpool fans had been beaten by a group of radical fans from the disbanded football club CSKA (Kyiv).
