When investigating the attempt on the life of journalist Arkady Babchenko, the investigation legitimately resorted to staging his murder, which allowed to obtain important evidence of contacts between the detained organizer and Russian special services, as well as more accurate information on the alleged goals, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko has said.

“As a result of this strategic operation, the investigation received a list of 47 (!) people who could be the next victims of terrorists. They are mainly well-known Ukrainian and ex-Russian journalists … Today they are notified of the danger and their protection is being provided,” Lutsenko wrote on his Facebook page on June 1 evening.

Also, thanks to these operative measures, it became known that after the contract for the murder of Babchenko, the organizer offered the killer, who acted in cooperation with the Security Service, to kill two more people. “At the same time, he noted that there is a list of more than 30 people whom the Russian special services want to make away with,” the prosecutor general said.

“The detention of G. [the organizer] before the terrorist act would not neutralize the threat to all these people. The staging of the murder gave an opportunity to obtain additional information about the list and about the mastermind,” Lutsenko stressed.

The Prosecutor General of Ukraine also noted that such a mock murder is provided for in Article 271 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and “has been used more than 30 times in the past 2.5 years.”
