Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko says he will step down as soon as the Verkhovna Rada of the 9th convocation starts work.

“As soon as the new parliament convenes … I’ll submit a letter of resignation,” he said on Radio NV on August 6 night.

The Prosecutor General of Ukraine shall be appointed and dismissed by the President of Ukraine upon the parliament’s agreement. Lawmakers may express no confidence in the Prosecutor General, which entails dismissal.

Lutsenko was appointed chief prosecutor in May 2016.

On June 11, the Verkhovna Rada registered a draft resolution (No. 10380) on the consent of parliament to a presidential motion to dismiss Prosecutor General Lutsenko. The document was tabled by the president as urgent.

On July 23, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Deputy Head of the Office of the President Ruslan Riaboshapka was considered as one of the candidates for the post of Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
