Ukraine does not need a separate court that will deal with corruption cases, but rather a chamber in charge of this task within an exiting court, Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko has said.

“Ukraine needs to create an anti-corruption chamber of judges that will deal with category “A” corruption cases. Regardless of which agency sends an indictment into court, in my opinion, these cases should be considered by a specialized chamber of judges,” Lutsenko said during the Transparency International workshop on Ukraine’s combating top-level corruption and recovering stolen assets in Kyiv on May 22.

At the same time, he stressed that he was in favor of setting up such a chamber “based on an existing criminal court.”

“Legally nothing prevents us from creating such a specialized chamber… Judges in charge of this task should be from among the new judges elected based on a tender,” Lutsenko added.

He believes that this can be done within six months.
