Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko has said that ex-President Viktor Yanukovych will be convicted in absentia and, despite his absence at court, will have defense and other procedural possibilities.

“Viktor Yanukovych […] will stand trial in absentia. He will have defense and all procedural possibilities,” Lutsenko said at a briefing in Kyiv on March 14.

According to the prosecutor general, the prosecutor’s office handed over the relevant documents to the Pechersky District Court of Kyiv.

Since November 28, 2016 Yanukovych has been a suspect in the criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 111 (high treason), Part 5 of Article 27, Part 3 of Article 110 (aiding in intentional acts committed to change the boundaries of the territory and state border of Ukraine in violation of the procedure established by the Constitution of Ukraine) and Part 5 of Article 27, Part 2 of article 437 (aiding in the conduct of an aggressive war) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
