You're reading: Majority of citizens support Ukraine’s accession to EU, NATO

The majority of Ukrainians say that Ukraine should move towards joining the European Union, according to the results of a nationwide poll conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation jointly with the Sociological Service of the Razumkov Center that were presented in Kyiv on Jan. 21.

Some 64.2% respondents spoke in favor of joining the EU, 12.7% said Ukraine should join the Eurasian Economic Union and 23.1% were undecided.

Also, 51.2% respondents said that accession to NATO is the best option to guarantee the country’s security. Some 26.1% spoke in favor of non-aligned status. A mere 5.5% citizens support a military union with Russia and other CIS countries, 1.5% said Ukraine should build a military union with the U.S., 1.6% named other options and 14.1% were undecided.

The poll was conducted on December 13-18, 2019 in all regions of Ukraine except Crimea and the occupied districts of Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Some 2,017 respondents aged over 18 years old participated in the survey. The margin of error of the survey does not exceed 2.3%.
