You're reading: Man taking policeman hostage in Poltava demands release from criminal liability

A man, who took a law enforcement officer hostage under the threat of a grenade detonation in Poltava on Thursday, is a local resident who has been repeatedly convicted and demands not to prosecute him, spokesman for the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in Poltava region Roman Hryshyn said.

“Avoidance of criminal liability, since this [hostage-taking] took place during his detention, and, of course, the person does not want to serve in places of punishment, and wants to avoid criminal liability in any way,” he said on the air of the ZIK television channel on July 23 afternoon.

Hryshyn also spoke about the terrorist: “He is a local resident, he is 32 years old, he has come into the sight of the police more than once, he already has a conviction for committing property crimes, as well as for possession of drugs.”

According to local journalists’ reports, the terrorist’s name is Roman Skrypnyk.
