You're reading: Mariupol court sentences separatists informer to over five years in prison

Illichivsky District Court in Mariupol (Donetsk region) has convicted a resident of Volnovakha district, who was detained in late January 2015 for the transfer of data about Ukrainian servicemen to the Russin-backed separatists in Donetsk oblast, and sentenced her to five years and four months in prison, the press service of the Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office has reported.

The woman collected and transmitted detailed information about the deployment, strength, routes of movement of servicemen and military equipment of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and other military formations that participated in the combat actions near Mariupol.

In late January 2015, the informer of the separatists was detained by the SBU. She was arrested at the request of the prosecutor’s office. The actions of the militant accomplice were qualified under Part 1, Article 258-3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (assistance to the activities of a terrorist organization).

In September 2016, Volnovakha District Court re-qualified the woman’s actions for a softer article, after which the Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office filed an appeal. Donetsk Regional Court of Appeal granted this complaint and sent criminal proceedings to a new hearing – to Illichivsky District Court of Mariupol.

During the new court hearing, the woman was found guilty of cooperation with separatists and sentenced to five years and four months in prison.
