You're reading: Media: Estonian diplomat Maasikas to replace Mingarelli in autumn

Estonian diplomat Matti Maasikas will replace Hugues Mingarelli as EU Ambassador to Ukraine this fall, the article in the European Truth ezine says.

The article says that the replacement of the ambassador is planned and is not connected with either the European or Ukrainian elections.

“Estonian Matti Maasikas will be the new EU ambassador to Ukraine. His candidacy has been approved both at the EU level and in Kyiv,” the article says.

The future ambassador is currently the deputy foreign minister of Estonia. From 2011 to 2016, he headed the Estonian representative office in the European Union, then returned to Tallinn as deputy minister for European affairs.

In 2005, he was appointed ambassador to the Russian Federation, but the diplomat did not get to Moscow because of his appointment as secretary general to the Estonian Foreign Ministry.

Maasikas worked for a moderately nationalist party and advocated a tough EU approach towards the Russian Federation.

Mingarelli serves as head of the EU Mission to Ukraine since the fall of 2016.
