Former head of the Main Internal Security Directorate of the State Fiscal Service of Ukraine Yuriy Sheremet is involved in a criminal case related to embezzlement, the Ukrayinska Pravda publication has reported, referring to Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).

According the official response of PGO to the request of the publication, on March 1, 2017, the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine (SAPO) placed information about the embezzlement by officials of the Main Internal Security Directorate of the State Fiscal Service under Part 2 of Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine to the register of pretrial investigations.

No notifications to suspected persons have yet been handed.

Asked if the case against Sheremet is linked to the case opened against Head of the State Fiscal Service Roman Nasirov suspended from the post SAPO said that at present the materials of the case do not have facts giving grounds for uniting it with other criminal cases being investigated by National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU).

As reported, on March 7 Sheremet announced his intention to immediately resign from the department to ensure the objectivity of the investigation against Nasirov.

Earlier, commenting on reports in the media about the possibility of investigating his activities directly, Sheremet said that he was ready for such an investigation in order to prevent future speculation on this issue. At the same time, he noted that his post does not belong to the jurisdiction of the NABU, which is investigating into the case against Nasirov.
