Yaroslav Hartsula, an honorary consul of the Kingdom of Belgium in Ukraine, has been beaten in Lviv on Jan. 7 night, the Lviv-based ZAXID.NET ezine has said.

“Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Belgium in Ukraine Yaroslav Hartsula was beaten in Lviv on Jan. 7 night,” a statement on the ezine’s website published on Jan. 8 says.

The incident took place on Shevchenko Avenue in Lviv around 9 p.m. An unidentified person approached the diplomat with aggressive remarks about his parked car. A quarrel followed, which resulted in the attacker punching the honorary consul in his head several times.

The police have established the identity of the person suspected of the attack, he confessed. The man has been released on his own recognizance.

“The police opened criminal proceedings under Part 1 of Article 125 of the Criminal Code,” Svetlana Dobrovolskaya, a spokeswoman for the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Lviv region, has said.

According to the initial diagnosis of the doctors, the consul sustained concussion of his brain and an injury to his right ear. Having been provided first aid, the victim was allowed to go home.
