MOSCOW – Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk plans to run in the country’s elections in 2019.

“Both I and the party I am a member of will certainly take part in the election campaign, especially as talks are under way today on establishing a political association of the Opposition Bloc and the For Life Party. I want this association to become a reality because it will represent the interests of the south-east and the Russian-speaking population,” Medvedchuk told the “Right to Know” program to be shown on the TVC television channel on Oct. 6 evening.

Medvedchuk said he does not rule that a candidate from the new association may compete for leadership in the second round of the elections.

“We say that the main task of the political association between For Life and the Opposition Bloc is not the presidential elections, not the candidate, even though a candidate from this association has every chance of making it to the second round. I don’t think that, regrettably, he can do more, but it’s possible for him to reach the second round,” he said.

The main theme of the political agenda in the run-up to the elections will be a peaceful solution to Donbas, he said.

“The settlement of the situation in Donbas, putting an end to fighting and the restoration of peace are the main goals. I expect that both the future candidates in the presidential election and parliamentary parties will have to present concrete plans and options of how they are going to solve this problem number one in Ukraine,” the politician said.
