You're reading: Mejlis supports initiative to declare 2018 as year of state language

The Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people supports the initiative of a group of scientists and cultural figures of Ukraine and 178 MPs regarding the proclamation of 2018 as the year of the state language, the press service of Bloc of Petro Poroshenko (BPP) MP Yaroslav Lesiuk reported on March 6.

According to the report, the relevant appeal was sent to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko by the chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, a member of the BPP faction, Refat Chubarov.

“We proceed from the fact that strengthening the positions of the state language not only does not deny the protection and development of the languages of indigenous peoples and national minorities of Ukraine, but also contributes to the completion of the formation of the Ukrainian political nation, an integral part of which is the Crimean Tatar people – the indigenous people of Ukraine,” reads the appeal.

Chubarov Mejlis notes that under the conditions of Russian aggression, the state language also plays a “powerful mobilization role in restoring Ukraine’s sovereignty over temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol.”

“The proclamation of 2018 in Ukraine as the year of approval of the state language will promote the consolidation of society and show our partners and allies of Ukraine around the world our firmness and confidence in our own ideals, forces and unity,” the MP’s press service reported.
