German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a telephone conversation with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that after a contract for the transit of Russian gas to Europe through the territory of Ukraine has been signed, it is necessary to increase investments in the Ukrainian Gas Transportation System to increase its competitiveness.

“The parties discussed the agreement on gas transit through Ukraine to Europe. Volodymyr Zelensky noted that he was satisfied with the compromise reached and the conclusion of a new contract, and thanked Germany for the mediation. Angela Merkel, for her part, noted that the next task is to ensure increased investment in the Ukrainian gas transportation system to increase its competitiveness,” president’s press service reported on Jan. 15.
