You're reading: Merkel to visit Ukraine in early November

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay a visit to Ukraine in early November this year, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has said.

“This fall, at the beginning of November, German Chancellor Angela Merkel will pay a visit to Ukraine, which is a very clear indication of the special attention of our German partners and the development of partnership with Kyiv,” Poroshenko said at a meeting with heads of foreign diplomatic institutions of Ukraine in Kyiv on August 28, speaking about the development of the Minsk negotiating process and the need to introduce a UN peacekeeping mission to Donbas.

Poroshenko said he had two telephone conversations with Merkel in the first days of the new political season. “Of course, we discussed our further steps to intensify the peace process on the implementation of the Minsk Agreements, including the Normandy Format and prospects for deploying a peacekeeping mission with a UN Security Council mandate in occupied Donbas, which is our key goal,” he said.

This is currently the only way to realize the security component of the Minsk Agreements for settling the situation in eastern Ukraine, he said.
