European Union Ambassador to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli has called on Ukrainian authorities to investigate the murder of journalist Pavel Sheremet, which took place exactly one year ago today.

“On the day of this tragic anniversary, I would like once again to urge the Ukrainian authorities to conduct a prompt and transparent investigation of this crime. It is necessary to find and bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” Mingarelli said.

At the same time, he said that the trust of Ukrainian citizens in the nation’s law enforcement bodies is impossible without making progress in the investigation.

As reported, a car belonging to Olena Prytula, the head of the Ukrayinska Pravda online publication, was blown up while Sheremet was driving it in central Kyiv at 7:45 a.m. on July 20, 2016. The Belarusian journalist died on the spot soon after the explosion. Investigators said they believed that Sheremet was killed due to his journalistic activity in Ukraine and other countries.
