You're reading: Health Minister Stepanov: Ukraine to extend quarantine, change rules

Ukraine will extend the COVID-19 quarantine until at least September, Ukrainian Health Minister Maksym Stepanov said in an interview with Ukrainian media RBK-Ukraine on July 15.

Ukraine cannot lift all quarantine restrictions on July 31, as was previously planned, because the number of cases in the country is still high, Stepanov said. On average, 62 people per 100,000 contract COVID-19 every day in Ukraine.

Stepanov also said that the quarantine rules would change, but the published excerpt of the interview did not give more details on that.

On July 15, the Health Ministry reported 836 new coronavirus cases, a small spike after a three-day decrease. However, the increase was accompanied by an increase in testing.

Although the total number of coronavirus cases remains high, more people have recovered in the past 24 hours than were infected. According to Stepanov, 977 people recovered from COVID-19 on July 15 and 224 patients have been hospitalized.

Given the number of new coronavirus cases, the government wants to prolong the “adaptive quarantine,” a set of rules that local authorities can change — ease or tighten — depending on the epidemiological situation in a particular region.
